York Competitive Festival of Singing

York Competitive Festival of Singing

In 1994, Jacqueline founded the highly successful York Competitive Festival of Singing, one of very few competitions in the UK exclusively for amateur solo adult singers.

The Festival takes place in the very comfortable surroundings of Haxby & Wigginton Methodist Chapel & Hall in an attractive village - complete with duckpond! - just three or four miles north of, and easily accessible by public transport from, the centre of York.

Since its inception, the York Festival has rapidly won a reputation as one of the country’s most prestigious and popular music festivals, with competitors travelling in veritable droves each November, not only from across the North of England, but from as far afield as the Isle of Skye, the Isle of Man and the West Country! The standard of singing is generally exceptionally high, and we are delighted to be able to engage the most eminent adjudicators, many of whom themselves have enjoyed international careers in opera and on the concert platform, and who have an enormous wealth of experience on which to draw and to share with aspiring participants at York.

Adjudicators have included Jean Allister, Sheila Armstrong, Douglas Craig, Margaret Duckworth, Angela Hickey, Gaynor Keeble, Ian Kennedy, Patricia MacMahon, Nigel Perrin, Molly Petrie, Vivien Pike, Tina Ruta, Stuart Smith, Gordon Stewart, Alison Mary Sutton and Nigel Wickens.

Each year, in addition to the more usual classes for Opera, Oratorio, French Mélodie, German Lieder, light Opera and so on, a number of classes pertaining to that particular year are included, celebrating the anniversary or centenary of a particular composer such as William Boyce, Gustav Mahler and Gian Carlo Menotti, as well as classes for Christmas Solo, Art Song from around the world and Folksong.
